If you had a choice, would you rather have only one opportunity to make an affiliate commission, or would you like multiple chances to persuade your potential customer to make a purchase through your affiliate links? I'm sure you'll agree with me that the answer to that question is pretty simple.
All other things being equal, it's much better to have multiple sales opportunities. You see, when most people promote affiliate products they do so by creating a simple blog or other kind of website that has a few articles related to the niche. Alternatively, they may decide to create a page on a third-party website instead of posting to their own website, but the overall strategy would be the same.
In any case, they simply put some relevant articles onto the web and then insert an affiliate link so they can try to make some commissions. The problem with this model is that most visitors who click on the affiliate link do not end up making a purchase, and these visitors will unfortunately be gone forever.
A far, far better strategy for building a long-term and highly successful business in affiliate marketing is to create an e-mail list. Your first priority as an affiliate marketer (especially for promoting information products) should be to build a solid subscriber list. You can get people to join your list by offering them a free download (usually a short report or e-book that has valuable information about the niche).
You would then simply deliver highly valuable content on a regular basis through an e-mail newsletter. You can then make simple recommendations for affiliate products (and perhaps eventually your products as well). Just make sure to recommend products that you truly believe will be helpful for your customers.
This simple but powerful strategy allows you to accomplish much more than you could ever do without an e-mail list. First of all, your subscribers will see an affiliate offer multiple times, so they will be more likely to purchase that particular product. In addition, you can build credibility over time and make multiple recommendations, and because your subscribers have come to trust you they may eventually buy multiple products from the affiliate links.
Last, but certainly not least, this credibility can eventually lead you to create your own information products in addition to promoting affiliate products. That subscriber list will help you get started in promoting your own products because you have established credibility and given them great content over time.
