In this article, I'm going to cover one of the most common mistakes that people make in affiliate marketing. By simply taking this concept to heart, you can greatly improve your chances of succeeding as an affiliate marketer.
The title of this article talks about "how to fail" in affiliate marketing, so I want to present you a surefire way to significantly hurt your business and ruin your chances of long-term success as an affiliate. What is that surefire way to fail at affiliate marketing? Quite simply, if you promote products while only thinking about commissions, you'll have a high chance of failing in affiliate marketing.
Now obviously, I'm not telling you to stop thinking about making commissions, since that is what this business is all about. The point is that you need to make sure that you're recommending high quality products to your subscribers and to the visitors on your website. Otherwise, you're destroying your credibility and chance of long-term success. Even if you make some sales in the short term, you will be less likely to have repeat business.
In other articles, we've mentioned the importance of building a list so you can present multiple affiliate offers to each subscriber. The key to getting multiple sales, however, is to build trust and credibility by providing good information in your e-mails and by recommending high quality products.
If you promote a substandard product (and there are a lot of these out there), then your customer will be less likely to trust you in the future whenever you mention another affiliate offer. In addition, if you're interested in one day becoming a product owner by creating your own information products, your name and business brand will not be associated with high-value information.
Not to mention, your subscribers who purchase through your affiliate links may very well ask for a refund if the quality of the product is very low. So you may not even get the benefit of short-term sales.
When it comes to information products, you should ideally purchase the product (or ask for a review copy) so you can test the product out. Otherwise, you should at least have some knowledge of the material and of the reputation of the product owner even if you don't actually purchase every single affiliate product you're promoting.
Of course, if you're promoting physical products on Amazon.com or other e-commerce websites, you won't be able to purchase every item. Again, ideally you would own one or two of the items yourself, and this can be feasible if you have a website that only promotes a couple of physical products. Otherwise, you'll have to rely on the customer reviews that appear on Amazon and other websites. In this case, the more positive reviews, the more likely that your customers will be satisfied.
