Why You Shouldn't Promote Your Affiliate Link

ByMichael Cervantes

When most people get started with affiliate marketing, they are told to focus on promoting their affiliate link in order to make commissions. Believe it or not, this is very bad advice for people who are starting out as affiliate marketers.

Why do we say that this is bad advice? How in the world are you going to make affiliate commissions if you're not promoting your affiliate links? Well, your visitor will obviously have to click on your link eventually in order to give you a commission. So we're not saying that you should never promote your affiliate link since that is, after all, how you are going to make commissions in this business.

What we're really saying is that your first priority as an affiliate marketer should not be simply to show your visitors your affiliate link. Instead, your first priority should be to build an e-mail list. No matter what else you are doing, you need to get people to join your subscriber list in order to create a long-term asset for your business which will hopefully lead to more sales over time.

Why is it so critical for you to build an e-mail list as an affiliate marketer? Well, think about the alternatives for a moment. If you simply send your visitors on to another website to try to make the commission, most of those visitors are not going to make a purchase (which means they will simply be gone forever).

You need some way to communicate with people so you can have multiple chances to make a sale. In addition, the product owner has a distinct advantage over the affiliate marketer when it comes to creating credibility as an expert and a long-term brand name (which in turn leads to more traffic and sales over time).

As an affiliate, however, you're promoting other people's products, so you're not getting the same benefits. We're not saying that you should abandon affiliate marketing, since this business model has a lot of advantages including the ease and convenience of making money without having to create your own products.

What you should do, at the same time, is to maximize your affiliate business by building a list. This will offset many of the disadvantages of becoming an affiliate marketer.

This way, you can promote other people's products while still building a long-term asset. This is critical for building a serious and long-term business.

One of the main benefits is that you don't have to buy or create a product. The Merchant who owns the product you choose to promote will also supply you with plenty of free marketing tools. The start-up costs are minimal and inexpensive as all you will need to buy is an appropriate domain name and some web hosting. You will need a website, usually in the form of a blog, but don't panic as WordPress and Blogger are both free resources and are easy to set up. Now, those who know me will tell you I'm no technical expert but in my early marketing days I was able to follow the instructions, without asking for help, on both of the blog sites to put together my niche sites and I still use them today. When looking for a product to promote choose something that interests you or something you have knowledge of as th...

How To Set Up A Successful Pay-Per-Click Campaign

If you are familiar with Pay-Per-Click ads, then you know that these types of paid search marketing work by putting ads on the side bar of your search engine or web site and are used to bring people to your web site. The concept is pretty simple. You create an ad.You place a price upon its worth. And you submit it to a search engine. When someone clicks on that ad, you are charged a price for it and they end up on your web site. You only have to pay if someone clicks on it. Sounds pretty simple, doesn't it? But now for the tricky question. Are you getting your money's worth from these ads? Ninety-nine percent of the businesses that use this type of advertising do not understand it. They send people to their home page and don't even know why the person came there in the first place. What's worse is the person who cost you that advertising cost leaves without you ever knowing what they were looking for. How much does this cost you each month? Does this mean that you...
