Affiliate Marketing 101 - Learn the Basics in Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is perhaps the easiest to get started in internet marketing due to the simplicity of understanding the process and getting set up with your sites. We will look at the basics of affiliate marketing and the knowledge to get started. Once you get started, the knowledge you obtain will allow you to leverage your skills to other areas of online marketing and e-commerce, in hopes of earning a substantial income.

First, we should start by defining what affiliate marketing is. Affiliate marketing is where you are paid by a vendor or other company to get someone to either buy something from the vendor site, click through to a website, make a call to a phone number, or any other type of action. There are numerous companies from large to small that are set up with thousands of vendors that will pay you to refer them business.

Here is how the process works. Let's say you have a blog where you talk about your passion - let's say snowboarding. On your blog content after you discuss your topic, you could have a link to a snowboard company where the reader could then purchase from a number of snowboarding products. If that person buys, since they clicked through from your blog site, you would be compensated for referring that person.

Now even if the person does not purchase right away, a lot of affiliate company sites are set up so that the internet browser will remember the cookies - meaning that even if the reader returns to the snowboarding site usually within 30-90 days, you will still get credit for the sale. Pretty neat, huh?

Since people are already shopping for thousands and millions of products online daily, it is your job as an affiliate marketer to get them to the site through your methods. So how do you do this? This is the online marketer's biggest hurdle - traffic. If you already have a popular blog site that has traffic in a certain niche, well then you can just get set up with affiliate links to products right on your page. Or, if you already in business, and you have a website, you can also put affiliate product links right on your company page or within the content. We'll discuss more about traffic in another article.

Start paying attention to the numerous ads you see online while browsing the internet - when you click on these ads and you purchase something - somebody else is getting paid. That is the beauty of affiliate marketing. Now it's your turn!

The concept is pretty simple. You create an ad.You place a price upon its worth. And you submit it to a search engine. When someone clicks on that ad, you are charged a price for it and they end up on your web site. You only have to pay if someone clicks on it. Sounds pretty simple, doesn't it? But now for the tricky question. Are you getting your money's worth from these ads? Ninety-nine percent of the businesses that use this type of advertising do not understand it. They send people to their home page and don't even know why the person came there in the first place. What's worse is the person who cost you that advertising cost leaves without you ever knowing what they were looking for. How much does this cost you each month? Does this mean that you...
